Review: LovetoKnow

14 March 2010 2 Comments

LovetoKnow (lovetoknow.com) is a wiki-type website that provides relevant, practical information on a variety of topics, ranging from celebrities to pregnancy. They currently employ writers to be a sort of ‘topic expert’, handling the responsibility of writing new content each month. Some training is required in order to submit and create articles for the website, guided by LovetoKnow’s staff once writers are accepted into the program. Writers also work with editors to perfect their articles, and word has it they’re very strict–even more so than Demand Studios.

LovetoKnow Review: What to Expect

As mentioned before, LovetoKnow is a type of mega-wiki, which currently hosts over 60 topics, or mini-wikis. Each writer is assigned a topic and is expected to write 15-20 650 word articles per month. LovetoKnow’s writers are required to have at least one year of professional writing experience, access to a telephone line and Yahoo instant messenger, and a provable knowledge of their assigned topic.

LovetoKnow requires more dedication than the average website–you can’t simply submit article haphazardly and move onto the next gig. It’s an ongoing writing gig where you must continuously submit at least 15-20 articles for approval (editors review all work) each month to make it work. Although writers won’t become involved in all of the mechanics of maintaining the wiki, they are responsible for providing most (if not all) of the content. LovetoKnow staff admits this can be a bit of a learning curve for some.

It’s not easy to get accepted as a LovetoKnow writer, either–you have to go through a lengthy application process, which includes an electronic application submission and several interviews, including phone interviews. You’re guaranteed a steady, monthly gig if you are accepted as a writer, however.

LovetoKnow Review: The Pay

LovetoKnow has one of the highest payout rates for an online publishing platform: $20 per 650 word article, if the article is accepted. Writers are paid once per month through Paypal for all articles accepted by LovetoKnow staff. If you’re writing at least the minimum, that’s a guaranteed $300-400 per month.

Unfortunately, writers do not earn money on any accumulated page views, like Demand Studios or Associated Content. But there will always be work available, which can be a problem on other online publishing platforms.

LovetoKnow probably can’t replace a full-time gig, but it could work as a part-time assignment.

LovetoKnow Review: Benefits

So what are the benefits of writing for LovetoKnow?

  • It has one of the highest payouts available online–or $20 per 650 word article. To compare, Demand Studios only pays $15 per article. The only online publishing platform who pays higher is SEED.
  • The work here is usually steady, with no shortage in article topics. There will always be a need for new articles, regardless of which topic you’re assigned.

LovetoKnow Review: Disadvantages

The higher payout also carries a risk–the editorial standards here are higher, with low-quality work often rejected. Some disadvantages of writing for LovetoKnow includes:

  • Editors are reportedly very strict, even more so than Demand Studios’s editors. And they review everything you write. The editors here can be very blunt and more picky on details than other websites, so it’s important you learn what they exactly want to reduce rewrites.
  • Payments are issued once a month. Need money now? LovetoKnow probably isn’t the best place for you.

It may be difficult to learn how to write to their specifications. There are some complaints online about frustrated writers who found it too difficult to learn.

LovetoKnow Review: Verdict

LovetoKnow is a tough gig to get, but the steady, high pay may be worthwhile for some writers. The steadiness will provide some comfort for freelance writers who don’t have any long term gigs lined up. If you prefer to have more control over your work, however, this isn’t the right gig for you.

Just wanted to set the record straight: given the higher word count requirement at lovetoknow, the pay per word (about 3 cents) works out to be about the same as Demand (most articles there require a word count of 400 to 500 words).

If you want do a pay per word comparison, then yes, you’re absolutely right–DS definitely pays more. LovetoKnow’s PPW is a little over $0.03, but DS’s is between $0.03-$0.375. I would even argue DS’s PPW is higher than that, because they don’t strictly enforce their word count rule.
